Art Center Morro Bay is proud to present featured artists, Robert Dodge and Margaret Bertrand as part of its Winter Faire and Juried Craft Exhibit. Few things capture the imagination more than two, equally engaged, influential couples, as this award winning couple do.

Robert Dodge was born in the suburbs of Chicago and gained artistic inspiration as a young man while watching his father paint. He served in the United States Air Force and later worked in the computer applications department of a Chicago bank for twenty years. In 1990, Bob began to develop his own artistic style using oil, acrylic, encaustic, collage, pastel, ink, and more. Bob studied and practiced Zen Buddhism and much of his work is reminiscent of travels throughout Southeast Asia, Japan and China. His work has been widely collected throughout the United States and Japan.

Margaret Bertrand was born in Niagara Falls, New York. Margaret graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois as a psychology major with a minor in art history. She went on to spend thirty three years in advertising and marketing for a multi-
million dollar hair care and a snack food company. Margaret has been a full time artist for approximately twenty five years and works mostly in encaustic or encaustic monotypes. Her work is reflective of her extensive travels throughout Southeast Asia to include Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Japan, China and visits to France. Her work has been exhibited and collected throughout the San Francisco Bay area and San Luis Obispo County.

Both Bob and Margaret have studied art under notable instructors and currently reside together in Los Osos, California. Robert Dodge and Margaret Bertrand bring out their best of creativity for this very special curated exhibit, during the holidays!
This very special holiday event is a collective of exceptional paintings, photography and fine crafts, spanning a variety of artistic mediums from traditional to contemporary. Crafts include fiber art, wood, glass, jewelry and more.
Whether you are attending this extraordinary exhibit to observe or to find that perfect holiday gift, you are in for a delight! The Annual Winter Faire & Craft Show, featuring Robert Dodge and Margaret Bertrand will be on display from November 4, 2021 through January 3, 2022.

Call to Artists - For the Birds Exhibit

Call to Artists - For the Birds Exhibit

Jan 4, 10:00am - Jan 4, 2:00pm

Art Center Morro Bay 835 Main St Morro Bay, CA 93442 Map

Art Center Morro Bay is proud to present For the Birds. This exhibition celebrates the Morro Bay Winter Bird Festival and everything about the birds and habitats that are indigenous to the Central Coast.

Morro Bay and surrounding areas of the Central Coast, is a natural habitat and bird sanctuary to hundreds of bird species. Many of us have had encounters with some of these rare and wild species that become a part of the nature we cherish and stories we tell. Although birds don't always seem to exhibit feelings or emotions, their behaviors provide a fascinating insight. Birders who carefully study their subjects learn to read traits that reveal emotional cues that define habits and survival techniques. For example, fear is necessary to evade predators, aggression helps defend a territory or feeding area and grief is displayed during the loss of a mate or chick. Positive emotions such as joy and love could simply be humans viewing birds in human-like terms. This view of emotions is debatable, yet the line between emotion and instinct is thought to be very thin or at best, blurry.

This exhibit is our visual, creative celebration, of these magnificent and beautifully wild aviators, that evoke mesmerizing feelings in our soul each time we look into the sky and see them glide effortlessly in the air… Let's embrace and celebrate these incredible creatures, and their physical and spiritual attributes.

For this exhibit, please submit artworks that celebrate birds! This exhibit is open to all MBAA Members and Non-Members. There are no size requirements for this show. Artists are limited to (3) wall hung entries, open to all mediums. Please submit artwork with entry forms and wire tags. artcentermorrobay.org/index.php/gallery/gallery-forms-policies/ in person on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, 10am - 2pm. Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present a workshop in watercolors with artist and professional art instructor, Virginia Mack!

Are you a watercolorist? Do you have basic watercolor skills? In this series of classes, we will use watercolors as a medium for exploration. We will examine the different ways and uses of color, texture, line, and light. We will also analyse the effects of watercolors when mixed with other media.

The goal is to discover new, and satisfying, directions in your use of this compelling medium.

Organic materials will be the subject matter for this class. Consider sticks, plants, vegetables, landscapes with pathways, seascapes with rocks, perhaps a bird or two. For more information about the instructor, please visit our website.

About Instructor: Virginia Mack is a native Californian who grew up in the SF Bay Area. Having painted since the age of 4 years of age, she has worked in all painting media including stained glass. Virginia taught art in the Bay Area until her move to the Central Coast where she taught Studio Arts, Art History and Art Appreciation at Cuesta and Hancock Colleges.

"I love to explore all parts of the county seeking subject matter for paintings. In recent years that
exploration included Kayak journeys out onto the bay. I have developed many pieces based on
studies I initiated from my kayak ("Kayak-view"). I work primarily in watercolors and am a colorist at heart. My series of bird studies, each done within 2 minutes, before the bird flies, swims, or walks away and my studio pieces based on my explorations of my yard (during Covid
stay-at-home) and the county are my primary subjects at present. In my most recent work, I have been working with the relationship between birds and their environments as reflected through various art media."

Virginia received her education in fine arts at the University of California, Berkeley and California College of Arts and Crafts.

Art Center Morro Bay presents its annual, For the Birds exhibit in conjunction with the Morro Bay Winter Bird Festival.

This exciting exhibition celebrates Morro Bay's vast array of indigenous species of birds and all things bird-related! During this exhibit, Art Center Morro Bay will be featuring the high-fired stoneware and sculptures of local artists, Stepen Juel and Sheri Parisian, owners of Dancing Dog Clayworks.

Pacific Wildlife Care will be joining us at Art Center Morro Bay during the opening reception with at least one or more of their fascinating, rescued birds! Pacific Wildlife Care is San Luis Obispo county's only licensed rehabilitation center that cares for injured birds, mammals, and reptiles. As a result of the Apex Houston oil spill that brought a number of oiled pelicans to the beaches of San Luis Obispo County, Pacific Wildlife Care, a non-profit, volunteer organization, was founded in 1986. Since then, PWC has grown from a small group of dedicated home rehabilitators into a successful non-profit organization with a well-equipped rehabilitation center, a full-time wildlife veterinarian, a small paid staff, and over 200 volunteers. PWC is open 8:30am – 5pm daily. For more information about this wildlife rescue service, please visit their website at www.pacificwildlifecare.org Report injured, sick or orphaned wildlife by calling the Hotline: 805-543-9453. Art Center Morro Bay 835 Main St Morro Bay, CA 93442 Map

Stepen Juel began his love affair with clay in the 1970's while studying and working in the sculpture department at a California community college. Wood had been a preferred medium until he watched students in a neighboring studio, working on pottery wheels. "Clay work proved to be the perfect wedding of earth, water, fire and air - thus the marriage was consummated." Having completed an MA degree in recreation therapy, Stepen taught ceramic classes to seniors and adolescents with developmental disabilities where he learned the true value of clay in the creative process. "I spent 16 years overseeing county, aging and disability programs, while sustaining my interest in clay in my home studio."

My love of whimsy, incorporating animals into functional ware, can be seen in my current work. I've developed a special fondness for those ancient, mythical flying creatures, dragons! Dragons and the many crows that inhabit the woods surrounding our home have flavored my recent work.

Sheri Parisian loves the way clay can express emotionally what she cannot express with words. Also, the sensual quality of clay that is so satisfying while creating with it.

"I start with a vague vision of my final construction and the emotion that I want to transmit. Sometimes with whimsy or lightness to share, sometimes with the concern for the difficulties that we all endure. The final piece is often its own. Something I merely watch as it's born. Honoring bird forms and bird structures have become my passion and expression."

Sheri dreams of taking flight like a bird. One of her ceramic series evolves around the fantasy of becoming a bird. "A woman, I imagine, is dawning a magic mask that is slowly transforming her into a bird. Then it all fails and she returns to reality," Touched by their sense of survival and resilience, Sheri imagines herself closely studying the personality and character of these creatures while they are sitting nearby at the water's edge. She conveys that there are life lessons to be learned from their strength.

Sheri enjoys the outdoors where she can communicate with them. Her birdhouses are for their protection and pure entertainment! Some of them hang while others stand on feet! "I'm communing with them… a reverence that is deep within."

Upon retiring in 2005, husband and wife, Stepen Juel and Sheri Parisian, moved to Cambria, CA and opened Dancing Dog Clayworks.

During this exhibit, you'll find bird related ceramics by Sheri Parisian and Stepen Juel of Dancing Dog Clayworks, fine art paintings, photography and three dimensional art to include jewelry, glass and more. Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present lecturer John Seed discussing his recent book "Disrupted Realism".

John Seed is a Professor Emeritus of art and art history who taught at Mt. San Jacinto College for 31 years. Seed has written about art and artists for Arts of Asia, Art Ltd., Catamaran, Harvard Magazine, International Artist, The HuffingtonPost and Poets and Artists. He was a featured expert in the Google Arts and Culture video series "Name That Art."

Disrupted Realism is the first book to survey the works of contemporary painters who are challenging and reshaping the tradition of Realism. Helping art lovers, collectors, and artists approach and understand this compelling new phenomenon, it includes the works of 38 artists whose paintings respond to the subjectivity and disruptions of modern experience. Widely published author and blogger John Seed, who believes that we are "the most distracted society in the history of the world," has selected artists he sees as visionaries in this developing movement. The artists' impulses toward disruption are as individual as the artists themselves, but all share the need to include perception and emotion in their artistic process.

Quick Studies in Clay with Anne Grannis

Quick Studies in Clay with Anne Grannis

Jan 22, 1:00pm - Jan 23, 4:00pm

Art Center Morro Bay 835 Main St Morro Bay, CA 93442 Map

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present a 2 half-days workshop, Quick Studies in Clay with Anne Grannis.

Anne will be teaching techniques to sculpt a whole figure, a torso, or a bas relief using water-based clay. This intense session will guide the beginning or advanced sculptor in the essence of figure sculpting, giving the student a spontaneous, emotional arena to work in; without the finishing details of a refined piece. We will be working from a live model.

Anne has been teaching and working with clay since she was a girl growing up in an artistic household of New England. She has taught ceramic workshops, stone carving and sculpture in Northern California areas; Fort Mason Art School, San Francisco and Half Moon Bay. She was the Artistic Council Chair of SFWA Gallery – Sculpture Representative. She's taught Quick Studies in Clay in Half Moon Bay, Redwood City, and Palo Alto and now shares her knowledge with us in Morro Bay.

Anne says: "I often use natural clay, as it is an amazingly pliable medium with which to work and being a material originating eons ago, I can connect with the far past to create anything large and rough or small and detailed, with everything in between. My sense of whimsy prevails."

Clay and tools will be provided. Please bring a 12" to 14" square board to work on and an apron. Bring your favorite tools or supplies if you have them. Firing of the art is the responsibility of the student, and/or you may work with the instructor outside of the workshop for firing.

CALL TO ARTISTS - EARTH AND FIRE

CALL TO ARTISTS - EARTH AND FIRE

Feb 22, 10:00am - Feb 22, 2:00pm

Art Center Morro Bay 835 Main St Morro Bay, CA 93442 Map

CALL FOR ARTISTS – EARTH AND FIRE

Art Center Morro Bay is proud to present Earth and Fire.

In the beginning, Earth was on fire and devoid of life. In the eons since, Earth became the Mother to all living organisms. All life forms depend on the original primordial forces to survive and flourish. We humans are made of these elements.

Artists fire clay into vessels that carry our food grown by the Earth and Sun. We carry the burning fire of love and compassion in our hearts for our Mother, and yet, we treat her with disrespect.

This exhibition will reflect how we view our own fundamental beginnings, born of primitive elements and how these origins resonate within ourselves.

Let's embrace and celebrate these incredible powers and their attributes, physical and spiritual. This theme celebrates artistic expression in all 2D media.

Space is limited to MBAA members only in the main gallery, downstairs for this exhibit. Limitations on the number of art submissions may apply. Please submit artwork with entry forms and wire tags. artcentermorrobay.org/index.php/entry-forms/ in person on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, 10am - 2pm.

Earth and Fire will be on display in the main gallery concurrent with AQUARIUS, which will be on display in the Virginia Russel gallery upstairs from February 24 through April 4, 2022.

RECEPTION: Sunday, February, 27, 2-4pm (Pending Covid Restrictions)

Art Center Morro Bay is proud to host the Central Coast Watercolor Society's annual art exhibit, Aquarius 2022.

Frank Eber will be the juror and judge of awards for this exceptional art exhibit. In addition, Mr. Eber will hold a 2-day watercolor workshop (February 28-March 1, 2022) in conjunction with this exhibit.

Frank Eber was raised in Europe and mentored by Italian master painter, Renato Casaro. During the 1980's and 90's, Frank worked as a professional illustrator and portrait artist. He settled in the south of France, where he lived and painted on location for three years. His love of travel has taken him to several countries, including the United States, where he currently resides in California. Frank paints with watercolor in the studio and en plein air.

"Atmosphere and light are just the first steps. As shapes dissolve in patterns of value and light, the painting becomes more a poetic statement than a literal representation. Painting is my meditation, my refuge. It exists in a timeless state–an ego-less zone in which I feel whole, as though life actually makes sense. One day I may be able to paint something of significance." - Frank Eber

Frank is a Signature member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America. He is also an Artist member of the California Art Club.
Frank conducts workshops and demonstrations of his watercolors at the international level and is increasingly in demand as a judge and juror.

form of expression with artist, Vicky Hoffman

Class description: Using a diverse source of materials and media, such as newspaper,

This is a two-day workshop, and each day is three hours in length. We will explore the
following concepts:
 A collage that deals / confronts the grid
 A collage that invents a new landscape
 A collage based on dreams and memories
 A collage based as a self-portrait

CALL FOR ARTISTS - LOVE: OPEN HEARTS, OPEN MINDS

Art Center Morro Bay 835 Main St Morro Bay, CA 93442 Map

CALL FOR ARTISTS – LOVE: OPEN HEARTS, OPEN MINDS

Art Center Morro Bay is proud to present Love: Open Hearts, Open Minds.

LOVE has been the inspiration for the creation of more great art than any other human emotion. How do you depict love? How do you convey its complexity and intensity?
Encompassing divine and mortal love, chaste and unchaste, love is what we seek above all. Love breeds compassion, intimacy, fear, longing, jealousy, change, unquestionable certainty, delusion, beauty, darkness and connects to the very core of the human condition. We can be euphoric, drunk and ecstatic in love.
Art speaks many languages of love - gently, slowly, kindly, playfully or critically and violently. This exhibit will examine LOVE as the greatest mystery of all.
This theme is a celebration of beauty or tragedy, evoked by emotions stirred from the physical or spiritual effects of love. Artistic expression in all 2D media is acceptable.

Space is limited to MBAA members only in the main gallery, downstairs for this exhibit. Limitations on the number of art submissions may apply. Please submit artwork with entry forms and wire tags. artcentermorrobay.org/index.php/entry-forms/ on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, 10am – 2pm, at Art Center Morro Bay.

Love, Open Heart, Open Minds will be on display in the main gallery concurrent with CONVERGENCE, Wax on the Water on display in the Virginia Russell gallery upstairs, from April 7 through May 23, 2022.

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present a workshop in printmaking with
artists Rosey and Barbara Rosenthal

Class description: The Central Coast Printmakers will be leading a workshop in printmaking. You will learn the difference between relief and intaglio as you work on a linoleum plate. You will

You will also be taught to ink your plate in the intaglio method (think etching and engraving) and print it with an etching press. In this way you will have a good introduction to two common
printmaking techniques without the use of acid on a metal plate. Experienced printmakers will enjoy experimenting with this process as well.

Materials: linoleum plates, papers, inks and use of tools and other materials are all Included.
Bring your own notebook, apron; personal gloves are optional. We have disposable gloves in a rather large size for inking and cleanup.

About Instructors: Barbara and Rosey, your instructors for this workshop, love sharing their passion for printmaking. Printmaking and teaching have been the foundation of their careers
for fifty years, and since 1981 on the Central Coast. Rosey first learned printmaking at Pratt
Institute and Barbara first learned from him. Together they have continued to study and develop their own techniques, including working with printmakers in Granada, Spain, for two years. You will be in good hands with two skilled teachers.

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to offer a presentation with Travel Photographer and Lecturer, Michael J. Costa.

Michael J. Costa first made the long the trek to the Mt. Everest Base Camp in 2016 and one year later returned to Nepal to explore the wonders of Annapurna and the Nagarkot region with
his camera. With images both awe-inspiring and down to earth, Costa captures the spirit of Nepal.

Whether you're inspired by the great Himalaya mountain range, have a soul-searching experience in Buddhist or Hindu temples, or connect with the people that you meet along the journey, Costa says the adventure is unique for each traveler; determined by who you are and how you choose to engage with the experience.

"The images I captured along the way reflect the people and places I encountered, as well as the nature of my personal experience." -Costa

Costa visually describes a journey that takes you to places like no others on earth. The rigorous hike to the base of Mt. Everest starts at 9,000 ft in Lukla, Nepal and brings you to the top of
Kalla Pathar at an elevation of 18,600 ft. The artist's travels took him through different regions in this unique landscape – mountains and villages, plains and glaciers – as well refugee camps affected by the April 25, 2015 earthquake.

Michael J. Costa is a graduate of the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He has worked as a photo journalist for the San Mateo Daily Journal and Sierra Star, and as a
videographer for Valley Public Television and Sierra Art Trails. Costa is represented by Stellar Gallery in Oakhurst, CA. He now splits his time between Oakhurst and Los Osos, CA

This exciting lecture demonstration will explore the grand vistas of the Himalayan landscape along the Annapurna Trail (up to 13,000 feet above sea Kathmandu and other, more remote,
