Call to Artists - For the Birds Exhibit
Art Center Morro Bay 835 Main St Morro Bay, CA 93442 Map
Art Center Morro Bay is proud to present For the Birds. This exhibition celebrates the Morro Bay Winter Bird Festival and everything about the birds and habitats that are indigenous to the Central Coast. Morro Bay and surrounding areas of the Central Coast, is a natural habitat and bird sanctuary to hundreds of bird species. Many of us have had encounters with some of these rare and wild species that become a part of the nature we cherish and stories we tell. Although birds don't always seem to exhibit feelings or emotions, their behaviors provide a fascinating insight. Birders who carefully study their subjects learn to read traits that reveal emotional cues that define habits and survival techniques. For example, fear is necessary to evade predators, aggression helps defend a territory or feeding area and grief is displayed during the loss of a mate or chick. Positive emotions such as joy and love could simply be humans viewing birds in human-like terms. This view of emotions is debatable, yet the line between emotion and instinct is thought to be very thin or at best, blurry. This exhibit is our visual, creative celebration, of these magnificent and beautifully wild aviators, that evoke mesmerizing feelings in our soul each time we look into the sky and see them glide effortlessly in the air… Let's embrace and celebrate these incredible creatures, and their physical and spiritual attributes. For this exhibit, please submit artworks that celebrate birds! This exhibit is open to all MBAA Members and Non-Members. There are no size requirements for this show. Artists are limited to (3) wall hung entries, open to all mediums. FOR THE BIRDS - Featured Artists Stepen Juel & Sheri Parisian
Art Center Morro Bay 835 Main St Morro Bay, CA 93442 Map
Art Center Morro Bay presents its annual, For the Birds exhibit in conjunction with the Morro Bay Winter Bird Festival. This exciting exhibition celebrates Morro Bay's vast array of indigenous species of birds and all things bird-related! During this exhibit, Art Center Morro Bay will be featuring the high-fired stoneware and sculptures of local artists, Stepen Juel and Sheri Parisian, owners of Dancing Dog Clayworks. Stepen Juel began his love affair with clay in the 1970's while studying and working in the sculpture department at a California community college. Wood had been a preferred medium until he watched students in a neighboring studio, working on pottery wheels. "Clay work proved to be the perfect wedding of earth, water, fire and air - thus the marriage was consummated." Having completed an MA degree in recreation therapy, Stepen taught ceramic classes to seniors and adolescents with developmental disabilities where he learned the true value of clay in the creative process. "I spent 16 years overseeing county, aging and disability programs, while sustaining my interest in clay in my home studio." My love of whimsy, incorporating animals into functional ware, can be seen in my current work. I've developed a special fondness for those ancient, mythical flying creatures, dragons! Dragons and the many crows that inhabit the woods surrounding our home have flavored my recent work. Sheri Parisian loves the way clay can express emotionally what she cannot express with words. Also, the sensual quality of clay that is so satisfying while creating with it. "I start with a vague vision of my final construction and the emotion that I want to transmit. Sometimes with whimsy or lightness to share, sometimes with the concern for the difficulties that we all endure. The final piece is often its own. Something I merely watch as it's born. Honoring bird forms and bird structures have become my passion and expression." Sheri dreams of taking flight like a bird. One of her ceramic series evolves around the fantasy of becoming a bird. "A woman, I imagine, is dawning a magic mask that is slowly transforming her into a bird. Then it all fails and she returns to reality," Touched by their sense of survival and resilience, Sheri imagines herself closely studying the personality and character of these creatures while they are sitting nearby at the water's edge. She conveys that there are life lessons to be learned from their strength. Sheri enjoys the outdoors where she can communicate with them. Her birdhouses are for their protection and pure entertainment! Some of them hang while others stand on feet! "I'm communing with them… a reverence that is deep within." Upon retiring in 2005, husband and wife, Stepen Juel and Sheri Parisian, moved to Cambria, CA and opened Dancing Dog Clayworks. Image, courtesy of Stepen Juel. Disrupted Realism is the first book to survey the works of contemporary painters who are challenging and reshaping the tradition of Realism. Helping art lovers, collectors, and artists approach and understand this compelling new phenomenon, it includes the works of 38 artists whose paintings respond to the subjectivity and disruptions of modern experience. Widely published author and blogger John Seed, who believes that we are "the most distracted society in the history of the world," has selected artists he sees as visionaries in this developing movement. Quick Studies in Clay with Anne Grannis
Art Center Morro Bay 835 Main St Morro Bay, CA 93442 Map
Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present a 2 half-days workshop, Quick Studies in Clay with Anne Grannis. Anne will be teaching techniques to sculpt a whole figure, a torso, or a bas relief using water-based clay. This intense session will guide the beginning or advanced sculptor in the essence of figure sculpting, giving the student a spontaneous, emotional arena to work in; without the finishing details of a refined piece. We will be working from a live model. Anne has been teaching and working with clay since she was a girl growing up in an artistic household of New England. She has taught ceramic workshops, stone carving and sculpture in Northern California areas; Fort Mason Art School, San Francisco and Half Moon Bay. She was the Artistic Council Chair of SFWA Gallery – Sculpture Representative. She's taught Quick Studies in Clay in Half Moon Bay, Redwood City, and Palo Alto and now shares her knowledge with us in Morro Bay. Anne says: "I often use natural clay, as it is an amazingly pliable medium with which to work and being a material originating eons ago, I can connect with the far past to create anything large and rough or small and detailed, with everything in between. My sense of whimsy prevails." Clay and tools will be provided. Please bring a 12" to 14" square board to work on and an apron. Bring your favorite tools or supplies if you have them. In this demo workshop I will share my pursuit of the birds in my yard, from my kayak, from shore. As I have gotten to know many of the birds, my ability to create satisfying images of them has gotten more fluid. I will share the process of seeing the birds more completely and the process of transforming what I have seen into what I paint. I will demonstrate the various techniques I use in capturing the likenesses of the birds and invite participants to try some of these techniques.

He settled in the south of France, where he lived and painted on location for three years. His love of travel has taken him to several countries, including the United States, where he currently resides in California. Frank paints with watercolor in the studio and en plein air. "Atmosphere and light are just the first steps. As shapes dissolve in patterns of value and light, the painting becomes more a poetic statement than a literal representation. Painting is my meditation, my refuge. It exists in a timeless state–an ego-less zone in which I feel whole, as though life actually makes sense. One day I may be able to paint something of significance." - Frank Eber Frank is a Signature member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America. Encompassing divine and mortal love, chaste and unchaste, love is what we seek above all. Love breeds compassion, intimacy, fear, longing, jealousy, change, unquestionable certainty, delusion, beauty, darkness and connects to the very core of the human condition. We can be euphoric, drunk and ecstatic in love.
Art speaks many languages of love - gently, slowly, kindly, playfully or critically and violently. This exhibit will examine LOVE as the greatest mystery of all.
